Glasgow has some nice green spaces to offer but every once in a while, Kelvingrove Park and Glasgow Green just don’t do the job. For those days it is a good idea to take a break from the city and catch a train to Balloch. No time is no excuse, as it only takes about 45 minutes to get there (Glasgow Queen Street station to Balloch). The train journey is already part of the experience as you can spot lots of cute villages (and maybe the one or other sheep).
Balloch is very little – but that’s what you have signed up for: the countryside and lots of nature. There is a visitor center in Balloch, a few places to eat, a Sea Life Aquarium and of course the reason why we came here in first place: Loch Lomond. Loch is the Scottish word for lake and this particular one is supposedly one of the most beautiful lakes in the whole of Scotland.
There is a nice walking trail that takes about an hour and goes past Balloch Castle. The walk through the Country Park gives you a nice view over the lake and has plenty of great picture spots to offer. The trail is very easy to find, and the visitor center can provide you with a map. When in Balloch, the Country Park is definitely what you don’t want to miss out on!
If you want to see more of the lake, there is also the option to do a boat trip. You are provided with some information about Loch Lomond and get to see some amazing scenery. However, in my eyes, this is certainly a good-weather-only activity.
Loch Lomond has much more to offer than just the parts that you get to see when you drive to Balloch, but if one day or just an afternoon is all you’ve got (and if you rely on public transport), this is a great option to escape the city.
The next time you spot the sun, hop on the train and enjoy your day by the lake!

Glasgow hat einige schöne Parks zu bieten, aber manchmal reichen Kelvingrove Park oder Glasgow Green einfach nicht aus. Für diese Tage ist es definitiv eine gute Idee sich eine Pause vom Stadtleben zu nehmen und in den Zug nach Balloch zu steigen. Keine Zeit ist keine Entschuldigung, denn die Fahrt dauert nur ca. 45 Minuten (Glasgow Queen Street Station nach Balloch). Die Zugfahrt ist bereits Teil des Erlebnisses, da man an vielen süßen Ortschaften vorbeifährt (und vielleicht auch an dem ein oder anderen Schaf).
Balloch ist sehr klein – man bekommt genau das, was man sich erhofft hat: eine sehr ländliche Gegend und viel Natur. Es gibt ein Touristeninformationszentrum in Balloch, ein paar Essensmöglichkeiten, ein Sea Life Aquarium und natürlich der Grund, warum wir überhaupt hierhergekommen sind: Loch Lomond. Loch ist das schottische Wort für See und Loch Lomond ist wahrscheinlich einer der schönsten in ganz Schottland.
Es gibt einen Fußweg, der ungefähr eine Stunde dauert und am Schloss von Balloch vorbeiführt. Der Weg durch den Country Park bietet eine gute Sicht über den See und man findet viele, tolle Fotomöglichkeiten. Der Fußweg ist sehr leicht zu finden und ansonsten, kann man sich auch eine Karte in der Touristeninformation mitnehmen. Wenn man schonmal in Balloch ist, muss man definitiv eine Runde durch den Country Park laufen!
Um etwas mehr vom See zu sehen, gibt es die Option eine Bootsfahrt zu machen. Man bekommt Informationen über Loch Lomond und sieht dabei die wunderschöne Landschaft. Ich persönlich finde aber, dass sich eine Bootsfahrt nur bei schönem Wetter lohnt.
Loch Lomond hat definitiv mehr als das zu bieten, aber wenn man nur einen Tag, beziehungsweise einen Nachmittag Zeit hat (und auf öffentliche Verkehrsmittel angewiesen ist), ist eine Fahrt nach Balloch eine gute Option, um dem Stadtleben ein bisschen zu entfliehen.
